Kill Bill Vol. 1 & Samurai Fiction 

Late in The Bride’s showdown with the Crazy 88’s, the lights are cut and a shadowplay fight commences behind a paneled wall, illuminated in blue. This is a visual taken from the opening credits of Samurai Fiction (1998). Excusing one or two instances, red is the only color that appears prominently in Samurai Fiction, which is primarily black and white. Bright flashes of red typically occur during moments of violence, when someone dies.

And by pretty I mean pictures that show what she’s talking about… because you know Tarantino movies have some fairly unpretty things… unless you think profuse bleeding is pretty…

Sucker Punch was a great movie, much better than I was anticipating. It has the same director as 300 so not surprisingly the visuals are breathtaking. It also had some pretty good symbolism, and I loved the Sin City-esque girl power thing going on. The only thing downside was that I feel like they should have cut down on the action sequences a bit and invested some of that screentime on character development, but overall it’s a good film. 

I just saw Shaun of the Dead which was a brilliant movie. I got waaaaaaaaaaaay too excited when I saw that Ed was playing Timesplitters. It’s incredible how many hours of my life went into playing that game. I feel like they should have had him playing the Notre Dame level on Timesplitters 2 though. Which is one of my favorite levels ever on a first person shooter because of the shotgun/headshot gameplay. Or the Mansion level on the 3rd one would be fitting too since it had zombies as well.

Why did it take me so long to see this?? It was pretty amazing. Since I’ve heard everyone go on about how much of a mind fuck it is, I was watching it very critically, trying to analyze it the whole time, so I was able to anticipate things more, however I probably still only understand it at the surface level. I would love to see it a few more times to try and completely figure it out.

Saw Garden State last night, other than the few awkward “why do you find it necessary to place your hand on your father’s chest to converse with him?” and “you do realize how awkward that is for your friend when you’re making out right there beside him?” moments I thought it was pretty awesome. The soundtrack was also really great. Speaking of, I’m going to have to go and listen to some Frou Frou now.
